Twitter's Evolution to Journalism
There are multiple social media sites for people all over the world to connect to. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter are the most common social media platforms and have their variations. Facebook emphasizes people to connect with their local friends and keep in contact. Instagram emphasizes a persona that is bigger than life. The way Twitter differentiate itself between the two is that it is like a mini blog. Twitter is a place people can express themselves freely. People can like, comment or retweet a post if they agree with someone. People tend to gravitate towards twitter because they can state their opinion, how they feel or post a meme.
Twitter is also a great platform for marketing. For instance, someone can use it to help promote a boxing match and give an overview of the event. For example, “Full of energy and in costume @DerekWarChisora livens up the audience with his theatrics during his weigh in! As well as getting face to face with his opponent @usykaa. What will he have up his sleeve for the upcoming fight? Only time will tell!” This displays the marketing aspect of twitter and what people who are in Public Relations will do for their client. Journalists can share other people’s tweets allowing others to share new information and sources for the masses. It makes it easier for a Journalist to adhere to their specific agenda and get their audience to see a new story that they are breaking. Twitter is an easy platform for people to connect to and it constantly spills out a ton of information with each article. The way the platform is set up it also makes it easier for a Journalist to talk about entertainment, food, News etc. Three important events that twitter has posted about has been the Covid-19 pandemic, The 2020 Presidential Election and the George Floyd Protest. Twitter has been able to successfully capture the content of each event and get the reactions of people all over the world. The Covid-19 pandemic being over twitter allowed people to stay updated on the cases as well as being aware of what to do as the months progressed. The Presidential Election being on twitter gave people the opportunity to see live how the ballots were being counted. The George Floyd protest allowed people to visualize what black men and women in America experience when dealing with police.
The twitter topics I chose were boxing and news. I followed @Claressashields, @DAZNboxing and @BBCWorld. Boxing is a great sport for your mind and body. It helps a person to develop coordination between the two and is a wonderful way to relieve stress. I have recently started boxing for exercise and quickly fell in love with the benefits and how I felt in only a week. I followed Claressa Shields, who is an amazing boxer and is currently dominating the sport. DAZN boxing gives an overview of the numerous matches that happens daily as well as give you a glimpse into the life of a boxer. BBC World discusses news from all around the world of health and events. The experience between twitter and bloggings tests a person's creativity with the limited availability of characters. For many it is not always easy typing in a character limit but it helps to make a tweet short and sweet. It teaches someone who is interested in being a journalist how to make a tweet concise for their clients.
